AT&T Program

We have had three sessions of AT&T Summer Program students this summer. Our first session was held at Challenge House #2, located at 311 Bryan Street. The second session was held at Challenge House #3, located at 123 South Fowler Street. The third session was held at Challenge House #4, located at 517 North Elm Street. The first session had 17 students participate. The second session had 20 students participate. The third session has 22 students participate. “Mr. Wally’ he said, ‘I have something I want to ask you; How come you do what you do”? I was caught completely off guard. I had taken him, a senior in high school, to a community concert, along with a senior girl. (I had gotten to know both through a faith-based summer teen “work-over-welfare” program, known as “AT&T”). It started with a door knock in 2010, over at Challenge House #2. I opened the door, and there she stood: sleek, bashful, determined: "I need help with math". 6 years later she has a job, and is about to graduate from our community college! Fast forward from that door knock; we just had breakfast-lunch at Waffle House---she picked it! ---and left with a take-out box that will provide another meal. I was glad about that! *A lawyer calls; his yard man has gotten old and sick, and can no longer carry out mowing and yard work at his office. He knows the easy way is to just call a commercial mowing company, but he's read about the work-over-welfare summer programs at Challenge Houses, and calls, "wondering if any of the teens might like work?"
